ABpositive AGM & networking evening…

The ABpositive AGM and Networking meeting is on Monday 24th April, from 6.30pm to start at 7.00pm at ACT Aberdeen, King Street, Aberdeen.

ABpositive has been running since 2012 after the conference of the same name in January of that year. Since that time it has played a role in the positive cultural journey of the city and ‘shire through networking, training and advocacy events and activities. The committee, however, are aware that the cultural landscape has moved forward in a very positive way over the past few years and feel it is time to review the role of the organisation.

We are asking the membership to contribute to this review and from the findings chart a direction for the organisation going forward. This will include looking for some new committee members to take on this responsibility as there will be a number of vacancies following the AGM, including the chair.

The AGM and networking agenda will be:

6.30pm – Arrival and registration – refreshment served
7.00pm – Presentation on the draft new Cultural Plan by Duncan Cockburn chair of the Cultural Forum sub group tasked with producing the plan. Duncan is Director of Planning and Policy Development at The Robert Gordon University followed by a Q & A

The ABpositive AGM will follow the Cultural Plan presentation and include the following items:
Agreement of minutes for 2016 AGM
Report on 2016/17 activity
Finance report
Discussion on future direction of organisation
Election of board including Chair, Vice-chair & secretary
AOCB
9.00pm – Meeting closes…

If you are unable to attend but would like any particular questions or views expressed please send them to the ABpositive email address aberdeen.positive@gmail.com. Please look out for a short follow-up questionnaire. If you wish to stand for the committee please either contact the chair on the above email address or put your name forward at the AGM.

Look Again Festival kicks off on the 20th-24th April with Look Again @ Garthdee Campus, a programme of exhibitions, performance, films, talks, jazz and workshops at RGU. From there they move on to the main festival, starting on the 27th April until the 1st May – pay a visit to the Festival Hub at the Belmont Filmhouse (open from 10am-5pm). You can find out more about the festival here...
Thank you to the team from Pushing Out the Boat who presented at the March WWWW&W networking night about their upcoming publication. Looks great and we urge everyone to purchase a copy and also share the information when it hits the shelves.

The Nordic House Exhibition, by Lesley Riddoch, is at ACT Aberdeen from 10am-4pm daily (Tuesday – Saturday) and runs until Saturday 29th April 2017. Arctic seascapes, Icelandic lava fields, Denmark’s oldest allotment gardens, women fishing on the Baltic and a subsidence-threatened Swedish mining town – all these landscapes feature in the pioneering Nordic art exhibition touring Scotland after a six week exhibition during the Edinburgh Festival in 2015. Read more about Lesley Riddoch here…
That’s all for now, we look forward to seeing you on the 24th April at ACT Aberdeen!A

Thanks to presenters and attendees at Feb WWWW&W event

Here is a summation from the evening:

AB+’s February Networking and Information night featured Fiona Fernie of Grampian and Region Chamber of Commerce, and Lesley Thomson of Aberdeen City Council’s Cultural Policy and Development Team.

They shared an overview of the current as well as future economic, commercial and investment landscape for the city and surrounding region, and how recent and future developments such as the Regional Economic Strategy can contribute to the continued success of a growing cultural sector and atmosphere in the city. Discussion also on ACC’s recently commissioned ‘365 Events Strategy’ and ‘Cultural Strategy’ developed by Community Planning Aberdeen’s ‘Cultural Network’ which has membership composed of those most active in the city’s culture and creativity, and in consultation with other key stakeholders and the wider community. It was wonderful to see and to hear how much interest and enthusiasm there is within Aberdeen’s cultural, creative and artistic fields to explore the potential for collaborations and partnerships with other industries, sectors and even services toward ensuring the continued success and sustainability of each. As these strategies enter their final drafts and stages of development over the weeks and months we shall endeavour to share them with members to share your views and suggestions and as always, we look forward to welcoming you to the next AB+ evening.

Aberdeen Jazz Festival continues until Sunday 19th – check out the programme and bag a ticket to something cool…click here for further information..

A Positive Step Forward…

Welcome to the first ‘post summer’ ABpositive newsletter. While we are aware that is has been a little while since we promoted any events and activities, we haven’t just been enjoying the summer and early autumn sunshine….we promise.

The ABpositive committee have been taking a little time to have a closer look at what we can deliver (with the resources available to us) that compliments the increased level of creative and artistic activity in the city. More exhibitions, shows, festivals and training events mean a bigger commitment of peoples time…and ABpositive doesn’t wish to add to that unnecessarily.

After much chat we have come to the conclusion that we do have an important role to play as part of it all – but with more focus on sharing, collaboration, meeting, chatting and networking. We have decided on a monthly Who, What, When, Why & Where event in the hope that people will want to share what they are doing, and others will want to come and hear what’s happening across the city and ‘shire

Who, What, When, Why & Where….

The format will be much the same as before with registration and refreshments between 6.30pm-7pm. From 7pm-8pm we will host up to 10 x 5 minute presentations along the general theme of Who, What, When, Why and Where artistic things are happening. We welcome people to come and talk about their practice, an upcoming event or exhibition, an idea they need help with, or just about themselves – for five minutes. Anyone interested in the cultural life of the North-East can get in touch and sign up to present at any of the sessions, and we encourage as many of you as possible to do so – it won’t work without you!

One change to the format will be that, on occasion, we will invite someone to talk for a bit longer about a specific topic that people have expressed an interest in – funding, city wide initiatives, cultural planning, training opportunities…..ideas for subjects and of potential speakers are very welcome.

From the end of the presentations until 9pm there will be more networking time and the opportunity to follow up with the presenters (after that it’s off to the pub…).

Please support – come and talk, listen, and create a wider network of creatives in the city making connections.

Call out for people to present at the first, and any other of the events. Get in touch at aberdeen.positive@gmail.com. Presentations can be as fancy or as simple as you like…
