Laurence Winram Photography Exhibition at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary

Photographer Laurence Winram has been invited by Grampian Hospitals Art Trust (GHAT) to exhibit his latest body of work in the Small Gallery at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary/

Born and raised locally, Laurence is a professional photographer who is now based in Edinburgh.

Shadow is series of portraits which was initiated a few months ago as a collaboration between Laurence and the models within his work, with a number of the image ideas coming from the models themselves.

Exploring the depth of mood and ethereal quality that can be evoked by careful use of lighting and double exposure, Laurence has created this series of stunning photographs using his own home made camera lenses.

Shadow will be exhibited in The Small Gallery in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary from July 20 to September 11 and can be accessed 24 hours a day.

AIYF Starts This Week! 

The highlight of summer is finally here as the Aberdeen International Youth Festival kicks off this week. One of the biggest celebration of youth arts. With young performers arriving in Aberdeen this week to take part the city will be buzzing once again this year.

AB+ Weekly Round Up

Extras Needed for New Drama A major new drama series is about to start filming at Balmoral and the producers are looking for extras. Starring Matt Smith of Doctor Who fame and written by Peter Morgan who scripted The Queen this is a great opportunity to get a great tick on your acting CV. Filming begins the second half of July.To apply click here Stonehaven Folk Festival This Weekend Stonehaven The festival offers a wide and varied range of performers, with some very exciting new bands and artists. In addition to the main stage concerts  you can  sample some of the many other events organised over the weekend. These include the ever popular World Paper’n’Comb Championship (Sat) and the Aqua Ceilidh (Sun). The Festival will open with a “Big” session on Thursday evening (9th July) and close with the Sunday night concert, hopefully something for everyone, and all set in beautiful Stonehaven- what could be better! Look Again Fest

Look Again Visual Arts Festival 8-12 April

Look Again is a new visual art & design festival for the North East of Scotland. Building on the highly successful RGU ‘LOOK’ festival, Look Again is a five-day celebration of visual art & design, of culture and creativity and a programme of creative events to engage the wider community of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. Brought together by Smart Consultants and Robert Gordon University.

A centrepiece to the first year’s festival features a major commission, the Look at Me Sculpture Trail which is based on the theme of exposing and connecting. It is a major component of the festival and will see six of the city’s 19th century statues being re-dressed with temporary pieces of public art by several different local, national & internationally acclaimed artists

With various exhibitions, projects and events across the city and with a jam-packed programme over the 4 days there is something for everyone.

 A reminder about Made in Aberdeen Artist Bursaries

 

Aberdeen City Council is committed to supporting the development of arts and culture in the city. The concept of ‘Made in Aberdeen’ is tied to the recognition that the city is home to a wealth of creative and artistic talent but that both the support and profile of this needs developed. The ‘Made in Aberdeen’ initiative aim to both increase the support for, and profile of, this talent; It is about having confidence in the city’s creative individuals, about nurturing and supporting our talent and finding new ways of showcasing it to a much wider local, national and international audience.

Made in Aberdeen includes the following support initiatives:

  • Artists’ Bursaries
  • Artists’ Commissions
  • Emerging Talent Prize
  • Made In Aberdeen Films

Five awards of up to £2,000 available to artists working in any art form, to support create, develop and/or present new work, participate in development opportunities such as residencies or training courses, facilitate new collaborations to support artistic development and experimentation.

AB + Weekly Round up

Art Exhibition coming to Fraserburgh

The opening of Breathless Breastless Project, breast cancer awareness art exhibition is coming to Fraserburgh this month. The exhibition, which has previously shown at 17 Aberdeen, ACT Aberdeen and at the Saltaire Arts Festival Bradford, will open at The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses, Fraserburgh on Tuesday 31st March 7pm, where it will be open to visitors for one month. This is a fantastic moving exhibition not to be missed.
The exhibition is being shown as part of The Moonlight Prowls 10th anniversary celebrations.

Music Industry Workshop Day

APA Creative Music Industries Programme present a Music Industry Day at The Lemon Tree on Saturday 21st March 2015 for young people ages 14-25 who have an interest in the Music Industry.

From 12pm – 4.30pm there will be be music industry professionals from around Scotland promoting their work and talking to young people about their own music and how they can promote themselves as an artist. sessions for our visiting professionals. In the evening, the day will be completed with a performance at The Lemon Tree between 6pm and 9pm from local musicians. If you’re between the ages of 14 and 25 and have a strong interest in getting involved in the Music Industry as a performer or behind the scenes then this event is for you. Information on song-writing, touring, and releasing your own music will be readily available on the day.

Workshops include-
12pm – 1pm: Music Production | North East of Scotland College: An overview, demonstration, and a chance to try, of some of the topics relating to Music Production.
1.30pm – 2.30pm: Hip-Hop/Rap | shmu: Bang On (Elliot Egerton) will be leading this session centred around the rap music industry and his experience of it.
3pm – 4pm: Music Journalism: 57 Degrees North lead a workshop on music journalism, including a look at the current state of the industry, and advice on techniques such as interviewing artists and reviewing
4pm – 4.30pm: Q&A: Breaking Into the Industry. The panel will be made up of a selection of industry professionals

AB+ Networking Event at RGU

Thanks to all who attended our event on Tuesday and made it such a success. With a range of fantastic speakers taking to the floor, the event highlighted the diverse range of cultural activity happening in Aberdeen and it was great to see all attendees networking and making contacts at the end of the evening.

Calling All Artists!

Keeping on the theme of success a new Art Project will be coming to Aberdeen this May (Which started from connections made at one of our networking events)

On behalf of Macmillan Cancer Support, SMART invite you to apply to be part of ‘Mark Making’, an exhibition of contemporary art, to be held at SMART’s city centre exhibition venue at Union Square, off Market Street, in a loft style unit overlooking Aberdeen Harbour.

This is an open brief to all creative practitioners working across all art forms and there is space within the venue to exhibit large 3D and sculptural works. We also have eight display cases to showcase jewellery and smaller 3D works.

Good News- Funding Boost for Aberdeen Festivals

We are thrilled to report that VisitScotland has given £25,000 for a new international marketing campaign to promote Aberdeen’s broad range of festivals.

The campaign will aim to align Aberdeen’s festivals, which include everything from music and the visual arts to science and dance, with the city’s rich array of food and drink and its accommodation.

This is fantastic news and will promote Aberdeen’s cultural scene on a wider international scale, boosting not only the cultural status of Aberdeen but also will have major benefits to the tourism industry as a whole.

What’s On-

One Act Play Festival 2015 is on Thursday 26 February at Act Aberdeen. Eight amateur drama teams from the City and Shire are poised to entertain you with plays of a serious nature to comedy. Each play will last 20 minutes minimum to 50 minutes maximum. This is a fantastic way to support our local talent in the region and see some of the areas up and coming theatre stars.

SPECTRA Festival of Light Feb Thursday 19th– Sunday 22nd

SPECTRA Festival of Light

Following on from the huge success of last, Aberdeen’s festival of light SPECTRA returns next week, with exciting events and installations across the city over its four-day period.

Drawing on the history that ties Aberdeen to its northern neighbours this year SPECTRA will invite Nordic and British light artists to celebrate the darkness though the elements of water, fire and ice in Union Terrace Gardens. Inspired by the magic of the Aurora and the Norse spirit that connects the cultures of the north, the 2015 light festival will showcase the best Scottish and Scandinavian creativity in spectacular fashion.

Arts Across Learning Festival- 23 Feb-20 March

Part of the Aberdeen Festivals collective, The Arts Across Learning Festival is a month-long festival in Aberdeen exploring creativity and learning for children and teachers. There is an exciting, packed programme offering workshops and performances free to primary schools and nurseries. There are also family focused events for shared creative experience.

Festival events take place in cultural venues and schools across the city, offering new perspectives and creative ways into learning. This is a fantastic Festival to develop artistic skills and to inspire our artists of the future.

Good News-

Fantastic news for Digital Art in Aberdeen, Creative Scotland, as part of Time to Shine have recently announced the launch of TTS.Digital, a £450,000 fund to develop young peoples’ digital creativity and experimentation. The fund is to enable youth arts providers and organisations that work with young people to cooperate with digital or technology partners to develop innovative and interesting new approaches to youth-led arts projects.

2015 Events – Update your diary today!

EVENT 1: Finding the Funds will be held at Queen’s Cross Church on Wednesday 21 January 2015.  Members are invited to register for this ‘practical and aspirational’ guide to securing the funds to get your creative ideas off the ground.  There will be presentations from;
– Gerard Kelly, Director of Funding Operations at Creative Scotland
– Sue John & Adele Patrick from Glasgow Women’s Library
– Gary Cameron and Laura Paterson from Aberdeen City Council.
These will be followed by discussion sessions with members of the panel and organisations including ACVO.  Come if you have a specific project that you are seeking funding for OR are new to fundraising for cultural projects and are looking for some inspiration and a place to start.  To help keep the energy levels up we will provide complimentary drinks and snacks.

‘Our Business with Business’ Thursday 6 February Event

Our next free ‘Cultural Conversation’ takes place on the evening of Thursday 6 February at Carmelite, Aberdeen.

This will be an outstanding opportunity to interact with leading figures from both the business and the arts and ask any questions you have on sponsorship and in kind partnerships. 

The event will be a mix of presentations and networking and includes free food and refreshments.
